Elizabeth Porritt Carrington’s paintings offer an immersive exploration of a dreamy vision of the natural world. Dense, fantastical, and populated with glowing forests and meadows that overflow with flowers, her work combines the flora and fauna of Appalachia and Ireland. She considers the extension of her physical body within her work, experiencing painting as a process of nuanced, multilayered awareness. She says, “Making art is a meaningful expression of aliveness, a deep noticing of life.”
Carrington has lived and worked in Asheville, North Carolina since 2013. Originally from County Clare, Ireland, she studied at the Grennan Mill Craft School in Kilkenny, Ireland and graduated with a BFA in 2002 from the Center for Creativity and Design in Galway, Ireland. Splitting her time between North Carolina and Ireland, she also teaches workshops in eco-contemplative art and frequently works with the School of Living Arts (SOLA) in Asheville.
