David Skinner

David Skinner’s narrative paintings meld references to folklore, frontiers, longing, masculinity, and technological evolution. The imagery floats in fields of color that imply spatial depth with occasional painted scribbles and collage-like elements that collapse the picture plane. He writes, “I’m inspired by particular moments that feel loaded with meaning and often find myself combing through home videos and photographs to find visual references for those moments. The paintings I'm making incorporate figurative imagery alongside abstract elements, which creates a strange blend of real space and flattened color fields.” Skinner is also an avid landscape painter, working from observation of quiet, unassuming, luminous scenes in Virginia, Ireland, California, and North Carolina.

Skinner lives and works in Asheville, North Carolina. He received his MFA from Western Carolina University and his BFA from UC Santa Barbara. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at galleries and venues including  Mclean Gallery in CA, Berozkina Gallery in WA, Barbara Bratthen Gallery in NYC, BG Gallery in Santa Monica, The Russell Gallery and Gormley Gallery, both in Ireland, and Blue Spiral Gallery, Elder Gallery, the Bascom Art Center, all in NC, to name a few.
